A Baroque stage at the end of the street
The Church of Montevergini, traditionally attributed to Vincenzo Sinatra, was begun in 1695 and opened for worship in 1762. Its concave façade, framed by two side towers, forms the dramatic architectural backdrop at the top of Via Nicolaci.
History and architecture
A Marian church where architecture, painting, marble and majolica create one of Noto’s most recognisable urban scenes.
From foundation to opening for worship
Construction began in 1695, in the years immediately following the earthquake, and continued through the eighteenth century until the church opened for worship in 1762. The design is traditionally attributed to Vincenzo Sinatra.
The curve that closes Via Nicolaci
The concave façade is restrained in decoration yet strongly defined by the geometry of its side towers and short entrance stair. Its form creates a true urban stage that closes the perspective of Via Nicolaci.
A single nave with classical accents
The church has a single nave articulated by half Corinthian columns. The richly Baroque high altar in polychrome marble is crowned by a temple-like ciborium of striking plastic movement.
Costantino Carasi and Marian devotion
The paintings and ceiling decoration are associated with Costantino Carasi. Subjects include the signed and dated Deposition of 1712, the Marriage of the Virgin, the Madonna of the Rosary with Saint Conrad and Saint Lucy, and the Madonna with Saint Bernard and Saint Jerome. The eighteenth-century majolica floor also survives.

The sacred backdrop of Via Nicolaci
Montevergini is both monument and urban scenery: its curve speaks to the street outside, while the interior preserves the delicacy of Marian devotion and the colour of eighteenth-century Noto.
