Rosario Gagliardi’s Dominican masterpiece
Facing Piazza XVI Maggio and adjoining the former Dominican convent, the Church of San Domenico is regarded as one of the most representative expressions of Noto Baroque. It was built between 1703 and 1727 to a design by Rosario Gagliardi, during the great eighteenth-century rebuilding of the city.
History and architecture
A journey through architecture, light and works of art, from the rebuilding of the new Noto to the richness of its interior.
A church for the Dominican Order
The church belongs to the new Noto that rose after the 1693 earthquake. Rosario Gagliardi conceived a building able to dialogue with the Dominican convent and with the urban space of what would become Piazza XVI Maggio.

Three naves, stucco and polychrome marble
The interior has three naves and a dome positioned above the second bay. Stucco decoration, polychrome marble altars and a rich decorative programme create a solemn and distinctly Baroque liturgical space.
Painting and Dominican devotion
Notable works include Saint Dominic Receiving the Holy Spirit, the Madonna of the Rosary by Vito D’Anna dated 1712, a Crucifix with relief scenes of the Passion, and the statue of the Madonna of the Rosary housed in a gilded wooden ciborium by Antonio Basile.

The stone theatre of Noto Baroque
San Domenico is one of the places where Rosario Gagliardi’s architectural language reaches its greatest intensity: façade, square and interior become a single story of stone, light and devotion.
