A church raised above the street
At the end of Via Antonio Sofia and the beginning of Via Trigona stands the Church of the Santissima Annunziata, commonly known as “Gesù”. It adjoins the former convent of Santa Maria di Gesù of the Observant Friars Minor and occupies a raised position above street level.
History and architecture
From its double staircase to the sixteenth-century sculpture of the Virgin, the church brings together eighteenth-century rebuilding and the memory of Noto Antica.
Franciscan memory in the new Noto
The complex is linked to the Observant Friars Minor and to the religious rebuilding of the city after the 1693 earthquake. The church still preserves a strong urban relationship with the former convent of Santa Maria di Gesù.
A double staircase as threshold
The façade rises above a double staircase with lateral flights. The central portal is crowned by a pediment and a large window, creating a solemn entrance clearly visible in the surrounding streetscape.
A single nave for sacred storytelling
The interior is arranged as a single nave, creating an intimate spatial setting that focuses attention on the altars and devotional artworks preserved within the church.
The Madonna and Child
Among the most important works is a marble Madonna and Child made in the sixteenth century by the Palermo sculptors Giovanni and Paolo de Battista and brought from Noto Antica. A painting of Saint Anne dated 1770 is also documented.
